Our History
Yale and SCSU, led by Professor Christine Broadbridge, secure an NSF MRSEC grant for Material Initiative for STEM Education (MISE) that enabled education and outreach programming for HS and undergraduate students as well as middle – high school teachers. As part of this grant, numerous research experiences for students and teachers were supported as well as a partnership among Platt Technical High School, ManufactureCT, and SCSU that launched the Materials and Manufacturing Summer Teachers Institute (MMSTI). MMSTI began as a three-day workshop designed to acquaint science teachers with real-life applications of STEM skills in the current manufacturing environment.
The Bioscience Academic and Career Pathway (BioPath) program was established as a result of the land development agreement that brought Alexion and more STEM companies to New Haven. Since then, we have had a growing role contributing to Connecticut’s workforce development by helping prepare the next generation of researchers, technicians, and scientists. This partnership with the city of New Haven created a successful program that is now housed within the SCSU Innovation Hub.
SCSU’s Academic Science Building opens and the Office of STEM Innovation and Leadership is created within SCSU’s cross-institutional new Division of Research and Innovation.
The first annual Bioscience Careers Forum is held at Jackson Laboratory.
The first annual Connecting Students and Professionals of Color conference is held at SCSU.
STEM-IL rebrands as the SCSU Innovation Hub.
IRWECA is launched, a partnership with the CT Department of Education and a broader version of MMSTI; supporting educators across the spectrum and throughout the state.
